2013 NEW YEARS RESET KIT Weight Loss Goals

An Associate shares a Message of Hope
The following is a guest post written by Hattie Montgomery, a USANA Associate who has lost 320 pounds through diet, exercise and a lot of hard work. She recounts her weight loss journey below.

Hattie Montgomery in 2008.
Imagine being 530 pounds. You know your life is slowly slipping away, and you’ve allowed that to happen because of all the pain you endured. But there’s this yearning inside you to live, to save your life. Where do you go? What do you do?
That was me three years ago.
Faced with an enormous task, I found myself wondering where to even begin. The first year, I practiced a calorie-restricted diet of lean proteins, fruits and vegetables, eliminating all refined carbs and sugars from my diet. The only exercise I could do was a bit of walking. It was slow and painful, but the more I tried to do it, the further I could go. After that first year I had lost 180 pounds and knew my life-altering journey was really happening.*
I’ve always been the person who researches and tries things out. I began exploring protein shakes and protein bars to add to my diet plan. I tried so many, I lost track, but they all gave me the spike then crash reaction.
That’s when my life and journey took a turn. I was plateauing with my weight loss. I knew I had to revamp my diet and expand my exercise, but again, I was left with the questions of what do I do. Then I met Matt Ryan and was introduced to USANA. I tried the RESET program and lost 8 pounds, jumpstarting my weight loss again. As I used the USANA program, I was ecstatic to finally find products that left me feeling energized and didn’t leave me needing a nap two hours later from the terrible crash.*

I began practicing the transform phase and was amazed at how easy the program was to follow. One thing that I found myself struggling with was planning my days and meals.  There is such an emotional connection to food, so when I have a plan laid out for me that’s quick and easy to follow, it makes my life so much easier.  I believe in this program so much because of the quality of products, but also because it’s the first time that I haven’t been stressed or worried about what to eat. I have been following the USANA Transform program now for two years, along with the daily MyHealthPak™ vitamins, and would never go back to any other plan.
I also ventured out and tried adding more activity into my routine. After Year 1, I could move, and so I decided I would try to take up tennis, practice yoga and even try jogging. I joined the gym and started working out with my personal trainer, Ray. Each week I do three days of resistance training and three days of cardio. I also spend time outside walking each day with my dog, Bear. In February, I competed in my gym’s indoor triathlon; I cried at the end because I just couldn’t believe how three short years ago I could hardly walk and now I was becoming the athlete I always dreamed of being.
By following the USANA program and adding more exercise to my plan, I lost an additional 140 pounds in two years.**

Imagine being 530 pounds and giving up on your life. Suddenly your life is blessed with an amazing company that believes in your success and happiness so much that they put out the best quality product and then take an active interest in your life. All of the pieces finally came together for me — the right eating program and supplements, the right exercise program, and an amazing group of people who love and support me unconditionally.
In three years I’ve lost 320 pounds. Yes, my life is forever changed, and I’m so grateful to have this amazing second chance to tell my story and spread the message of hope. It’s never too late, and USANA will be with you every step of the way.

Omega-3s Are Essential For Kids - USANA BiOmega JR.

Omega-3s Are Essential For Kids

Biomega Jr.
D r. Andrew Stoll of Harvard Medical School calls omega-3 fatty acids “wellness molecules.” And no wonder. Studies show that omega-3 fatty acids are not only great for the heart, but they also may support a child’s memory, focus, and learning.

U NDERSTANDING THE ABCs OF OMEGA-3s

Before you run to your local health food store, there are some things you need to know about omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids are a class of fats that come in three “flavors”: alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). Fish oil and cod liver oil are rich sources of the two most important fatty acids, DHA and EPA. The body converts the third kind—ALA, which is found in flaxseed and various vegetable oils and nuts—into DHA and EPA.

Omega-3s are essential fatty acids (EFAs). That means two things: one, the body can’t produce all the omega-3s from scratch, so these compounds have to be part of the diet; and two (and even more importantly), these fats are essential for staying healthy.

In the 1970s scientists started to study the health effects of omega-3s when they suspected a connection between the low heart disease rate of the Greenland Eskimos and their diet of cold-water oily fish. But a healthy heart was only the beginning of the story. Numerous studies now indicate that the benefits of DHA and EPA are far more extensive than heart health and play an important role throughout your child’s life.

FROM INFANCY TO EARLY ADULTHOOD, YOUR CHILDREN NEED OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS

As infants, DHA plays an important role in the development of the brain, eyes, and nervous system. This isn’t too surprising, since the retina of the eye consists largely of fatty tissue, and DHA makes up 20 to 30 percent of the brain. When children are toddlers, EPA and DHA can help improve their vision and cognitive and behavioral development. Once your children enter school, DHA remains a key component to their success, as it supports their memory, focus, and cognitive development.

Virtually every study of behavioral and cognitive problems in children—and, for that matter, in adults—has shown an association with low levels of omega-3s. Of course, as teens and young adults, DHA continues to play an important role. Recent studies have found that it may support hormonal and sexual health, help mood disorders like depression, and protect their hearts.

New studies are under way to confirm whether reducing symptoms of asthma, the leading chronic illness in children, and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) which, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, affects at least 4.4 million children.

GETTING ENOUGH DHA INTO YOUR CHILDREN’S DIET

Children are fussy eaters, so it’s easy for them to become deficient in DHA and EPA. The typical American diet doesn’t help either. It’s loaded with omega-6 fatty acids (vegetable oils such as corn and sunflower, and animals raised on grain instead of green vegetation), trans-fatty acids from fried foods, and hydrogenated oils, all of which interfere with the ability of the body to convert ALA to the much-needed EPA and DHA.

Since omega-3s and omega-6s are building blocks for all sorts of hormones and other important compounds in the body, it’s critical that they be in balance. Nutritionists believe that the ideal ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 in the diet is somewhere between 1:1 and 4:1. Currently, most Americans consume a ratio of 20:1 or higher.

One possible solution is to buy omega-3 fortified food products. There’s certainly a wide variety to choose from: eggs, dairy products, cereals, cereal bars, peanut butter, and infant formulas. But do they contain enough omega-3s? There is no U.S. recommended daily allowance, but most experts recommend getting anywhere from 500 milligrams (1/2 gram) up to a couple of grams a day of EPA and DHA. So while fortified foods may contribute, they don’t contain nearly enough omega-3s to make up for a diet that’s low in this important nutrient.

The easiest and most effective way to get your children to consume enough omega-3 fatty acids is with a dietary supplement. For a number of years, health food stores have carried fish and flaxseed oil in liquid and capsules—okay for adults, but the unpleasant taste and smell makes them unsuitable for children. New omega-3 DHA brands made exclusively for children are hitting the market. They come in kid-friendly flavors, like fruit punch and lemonade. There’s even a fruit-flavored chew, reminiscent of a popular candy and virtually guaranteed to please even the pickiest of kids and teens.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST OMEGA-3 DHA PRODUCT

Omega-3 DHA products vary greatly in quality and the concentration of omega-3s. To select the best:

1) Buy only purified fish oil products that are “ultra-purified.” Harmful levels of mercury, PCBs, dioxins, and other contaminants due to contaminated waters are removed. Mercury is a heavy metal that damages the nervous system and may increase heart attack risk, and high levels of dioxins and PCBs can cause a variety of cancers and can harm the immune system. PCBs are particularly harmful to children.

2) Buy “pharmaceutical grade” fish oils, which are the highest quality products on the market. “Pharmaceutical grade” refers to product specifications that include: providing at least a 60 percent concentration of EPA and DHA after processing; quality control steps that ensure the product is free from contaminants and other harmful compounds; a ratio of omega-3 fatty acids to arachidonic acid (omega-6 fatty acid) greater than 50 to 1; and, tocopherols (vitamin E) must be used as a preservative.

3) Buy a fish oil that’s packaged in a dark bottle and is refrigerated. Omega-3 fatty acids are sensitive to heat, light and oxygen and go rancid very quickly.

4) When buying flaxseed oil, get the freshest oil you can find. ALA can oxidize and become rancid.

CONCLUSION

Finding dietary supplements for children has never been easier.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids & Fetal-Pregnancy Health

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding >> Omega-3 Fatty Acids & Fetal-Pregnancy Health
Educating Couples to the Importance Omega-3s

Doctors indicate that Omega-3 fatty acids are a vital nutritional contributor to enhanced pregnancy health. But unlike folic acid, which is today well-known for its pregnancy and preconception benefits in preventing common birth defects, the profound value of Omega-3 fatty acids is just now becoming clear in nutritional research - and to the public. Hence, very few TTC or pregnant women know much about Omega-3s - or get the Omega-3s they need as part of their pregnancy and nursing diet-regimen.
The fact is, recent scientific literature suggests that Omega-3 fatty acids play a key part in pregnancy health - and in the healthy development of your baby. The benefits of Omega-3 fatty acids are clear. To summarize recent research conclusions, Omega-3s...
  • Offer critical nutrients for the neurological development of your baby.
  • Promote the development of your baby's cardiac and respiratory systems.
  • Support the development of your baby's brain and eyes (development of visual centers).
  • Have been shown to increase the learning and cognitive function of your child, with effects measurable to age four.
  • Increase the attention span of your child (a measurable component of intelligence early in life) .
  • Support the pregnancy health of the mother, possibly reducing chances of toxemia (or pre-eclampsia).
  • May help prevent pre-term labor and premature delivery.
What are Omega-3 Fatty Acids?
Omega-3 fatty acids are key to human growth and development, but are not naturally synthesized by the body. This means that Omega-3s must be obtained from foods, particularly from seafood sources, oils (e.g., flaxseed oil), or USANA dietary supplements. In technical terms, Omega-3s are "long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids" and are broken down into two fatty acid categories: DHA and EPA. Research indicates that EPA is important in promoting the development of prenatal and infant cardiac and circulatory systems. DHA, however, seems to receive more attention and accolades from the scientific community with regard to pregnancy health.
DHA is key to the developing brain, accumulating in vast amounts during infant development and during the first years of your baby's life. DHA is a central component of the nervous system and promotes neurological development, particularly with regard to the eyes and to fundamental cognitive function. Studies suggest that a baby born to a mother with high levels of Omega-3 fatty acids in her system will more likely have advanced cognitive faculties and an increased attention span (a fundamental non-verbal indicator of intelligence in very early childhood). These effects have been measured up to age four, suggesting that there are long-term benefits of Omega-3 fatty acid consumption during pregnancy and nursing.
DHA benefits also include the support of retinal development and enhanced visual function. One study tested over seventy mothers and their babies from between 4 and 8 months of age. The study tested for visual acuity and visual-cognitive learning ability by showing infants pictures and measuring reactions. Results indicated that babies born to mothers with elevated DHA levels had increase visual "skills" and faculties.
Of course, health benefits of Omega-3s are not restricted to fetal and early-childhood development. For mothers and mothers-to-be, higher dietary intake of Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to decrease the risk of pregnancy complications like toxemia (or pre-eclampsia) and reduce the odds of postpartum depression. Equally important, higher levels of Omega-3s may also decrease the chances of premature delivery (pre-tem labor).
Omega-3 Fatty Acids & Pregnancy: Overcoming Nutritional Deficiency
Large internal stores of Omega-3s, as well as a higher dietary intake of Omega-3s, contribute to fetal and pregnancy health - this much is clear. Omega-3s are stored by the body and brain of the mother, and the nutritional benefits of dietary Omega-3 fatty acids will be passed from mother to baby during pregnancy through the placenta. During pregnancy, however, if your diet does not contain sufficient Omega-3 fatty acids, your baby will begin to "draw" Omega-3s from your own internal stores in the brain. This can cause a long-term Omega-3 deficit (a deficit extending even to future pregnancies) if Omega-3s are not regularly consumed from external food and/or supplement sources.
Unfortunately, in a "typical" North American diet, we receive inadequate amounts of these key fatty acids. Research indicates that this nutritional deficiency is traced to a decreased consumption of fish, seafoods, and other sources of Omega-3 fatty acids over the past decades. The good news, however, is that Omega-3 fatty acids can be easily replenished through simple dietary change or supplementation. Sources suggest that pregnant women should receive about 250 mg of DHA daily - though very few women actually do.
Eating more seafood is one very simple solution, with one large caveat: increased pollution, contaminants, and mercury levels in many species of fish (particularly some types of tuna, swordfish, and larger predatory fish). For a pregnancy diet, the FDA has even suggested limits on how much and what kinds of fish a woman can safely consume on a weekly basis. Mercury, in particular, is a neural toxin which can hurt a baby's developing brain or cause birth defects. High levels of PCBs (or polychlorinated byphenols), which may be found in farmed salmon, have also been linked to birth defects. Raw or undercooked fish is, of course, a no-no for other reasons.
The other good news is that, in addition to some types of safer seafoods (moderate amounts of salmon, pacific cod, and canned tuna), there are dietary sources of Omega-3 fatty acids that do not contain pollutants or mercury. Indeed, newer dietary supplements offer purified (contaminant free) Omega-3s - some from seafood sources and some from flaxseed oil, etc. A supplement like USANA BiOmega is specifically designed for pregnancy, and is certified mercury-free. For nursing mothers, USANA BiOmega Omega-3 (or other pure sources of Omega-3s) are highly advised because fatty acid nutrients pass directly from mother to child via breast milk.
In a way, Omega-3 fatty acids are like the new folic acid. It's common knowledge that trying-to-conceive and pregnant women should have a diet high in green, leafy vegetables or other sources of folic acid (including prenatal vitamins). With Omega-3s, its simply a matter of educating couples to the importance of this key nutrients when it comes time to having a baby. A diet high in Omega-3 fatty acids may become the new pregnancy-health watchword very soon.
